Welcome to Gladiolus, a one-page fansite dedicated to the sword- wielding maiden of Fate/stay night, Saber! This page serves to introduce you, the visitor, to the blue-clad knight, as well as provide some insight on her character throughout the span of the game. As this site has many sections, here are page jumps you can use to navigate around this page: This site is based on the game only. I will not be providing information from the TV series and manga adaption. There are also many UNMARKED spoilers, so if you are currently or plan to watch/read/play Fate, you may want to view this site with caution.

the mindless crusade

Fate/stay night started out as a commercial eroge, or an adult visual novel, created by TYPE-MOON - it was released in 2004. The scenarios were written by Kinoko Nasu, artwork being drawn by Takeuchi Takashi. The game has 3 routes - essentially storylines - Fate (Saber's route), Unlimited Blade Works (Rin's route), and Heaven's Feel (Sakura's route). Like most visual novels, gameplay is basic point-and-click action (as in, hardly any gameplay elements). The game consists mostly of static backgrounds with character sprites and occasional CGs (essentially pretty images to illustrate a scene better). The interactive portion is mainly the player picking choices at particular points in the story. Shirou's fate depends primarily on what choice(s) the player picks. What is unique about Fate/stay night is that the game makes you play the routes in order (Fate => Unlimited Blade Works => Heaven's Feel). So unless you complete one, you cannot move onto the other.

Fate/stay night became very popular and consequentially spawned out into a 24 episode TV series based on the Fate route of the game, an ongoing manga series (currently six volumes long), a fighting videogame that has received an arcade release, PS2 port, and PSP port, drama CDs, and numerous fanworks. The series is even going to be adapted into a movie that will be based on the Unlimited Blade Works route of the game.

Fate/stay night narrates a ritual created by a small group of sorcerers through the eyes of Emiya Shirou, a relatively normal high school student in Fuyuki City, Japan. Ten years before the start of the game, Shirou was almost killed by a huge fire that destroyed most of Fuyuki City. He was saved by an eccentric man named Emiya Kiritsugu, and this man became his foster father. Kiritsugu was extraordinary not only by personality - he was a magus, specifically a magus who participated in the fourth Holy Grail War. Kiritsugu always strived to be a hero, a person who saved and protected the innocent; however, he was unable to do such a thing throughout his life. Saving Shirou brought a spark of hope in his life, for Shirou wished to be just like Kiritsugu. Shirou even attempted to learn sorcery through his foster father, but he was unsuccessful in it because of his lack on magical aptitude. Also, Kiritsugu passed away a few years before the start of the game, leaving Shirou alone on his own. Nonetheless, Shirou held his ambition to be a superhero just like Kiritsugu - to be able to safe people just like him in the big fire.

Through a series of uncalled events, Shirou gets dragged into the fifth Holy Grail War. The Holy Grail War has a relatively simple structure to it. In a given time interval, seven Masters, who are typically magi, are invited to participate in the Holy Grail War. Each Master can summon a Servant, a heroic spirit who was once, well, a hero. Unlike familiars and other common spirits, Servants are given an actual body thanks to Holy Grail's miraculous power. In addition, they cannot be hurt by humans – only another Servant can harm them. Each Master also gets a set of three Command Spells, which are spells that allow them to make their Servant do a command that is either out of the normal capacity of the Servant or against the Servant's will. The goal of the Holy Grail War is to eradicate other Masters and Servants. The remaining Master and Servant are declared the winners and granted the Holy Grail, an item that can grant any wish they desire.

Shirou becomes a Master completely on accident. He involuntarily summons a Servant in his house's shed, and by the proof of his Command Spells, becomes the Master of Saber. Besides being an amateur magus, Shirou knows nothing about the Holy Grail War, nor does he have the will to kill others. Will Shirou manage to survive and fight in this war, or will he end up being killed in the process?

Saber Class: Saber
True Name: Arturia
Sex: Female
Birthday: Unknown
Blood Type: Unknown
Height: 154 cm
Weight: 42 kg
Three Measurements: 72/53/76 cm
Image Color: Blue
Likes: (Eating) Well-crafted meals, stuffed animals
Dislikes: Sketchy meals, overly fancy dress-up
Alignment: Lawful Good
Master(s): Emiya Shirou, Emiya Kiritsugu (fourth Holy Grail War), Tohsaka Rin (in Unlimited Blade Works), Matou Sakura (in Heaven's Feel - as Black Saber)

Saber is one of the main heroines in Fate/stay night, particular the main heroine in the Fate route. She is one of the seven Servants made available by the Holy Grail system. According to the game, Saber is arguably the strongest Servant class, mainly so for being the most balanced. In addition, the Saber class has a consistent history of victories in the previous wars.

Calm, cool, stoic, polite, and reserved are some words you can initially extrapolate to describe Saber. Saber is a no-nonsense and direct person. She puts upmost focus on her duties as a Servant in the 5th Heaven's Feel. Consequentially, she dismisses her own personal wishes and desires as trivial matters, perhaps reinforcing her cold demeanor. One's honor and dignity hold great importance to her as well.

On one hand, Saber seems like the perfect warrior. Despite her small stature, Saber is a very skilled, powerful, and agile swordsman. She possesses the drive to obtain victory and the fierce loyalty towards her allies to make an excellent comrade in battle. However, this is only looking at one facet of her personality.

Underneath her cold exterior is a caring person who wants nothing more than to redo what she believed was a huge mistake in her life. The only way she can do so through getting the Holy Grail. Saber's dedication is very prominent her, for she is even willing to suppress her emotions just to reach that simple wish of hers.

Although calm for the most part, Saber can get riled up whenever taken by surprise. The most obvious instances are when Shirou tries to protect Saber, when it is actually supposed to be Saber's job to protect him. Saber is also a bit stubborn and headstrong, sometimes not even contemplating about her actions. In those situations, her honor as a warrior seem to take higher preference over what is really necessary for the situation (like when she goes fight Assasian in the Fate route).

On a lighter note, Saber does have interests outside of war and duty. Saber enjoys having tasty and well-structured meals, as seen throughout the game. At one point in Unlimited Blade Works, Saber gets angry at Shioru for allowing Taiga to cook (and her food is not exactly the most pleasant to ingest). She gets angry enough to beat him up in the Emiya dojo. Stuffed animals strike her fancy, particularly stuffed lions.

In the game, there is a status section that shows profiles, stats, and abilities of the servants. This information is taken directly from the game (descriptions are directly from the English translation version by Mirrormoon), so I do not take any credit for this section. Here are Saber's details from the game:

With Shirou as her master
Strength: B
Endurance: C
Agility: C
Mana/Magical Energy: B
Luck: B
Noble Phantasm: C

With Rin as her master
Strength: A
Endurance: B
Agility: B
Mana/Magical Energy: A
Luck: A+
Noble Phantasm: A++

Class Abilities
Magic Resistance: A
Cancels any magic below A-rank. No modern-day magi can hurt Saber.

Riding: B
Saber is able to ride most vehicles with above average skill. Saber cannot ride demonic beasts or creatures of holy/divine beast class.

Skills
Instinct: A
The ability to always "feel" the best course for oneself during combat. This heightened sixth sense is now close to precognition. It reduces in half any obstacle to vision and hearing.

Mana/Magical Energy Burst: A
This transfers magical energy into one's weapon and body, and by releasing the magical energy instantaneously, it increases one's ability. Simply said, it is like magical energy jet propulsion.

Saber uses this magical energy for her sword techniques, guarding, and movement. Because of her great magical energy capacity, she can fight Berserker even though she is a girl of a small size. A normal weapon without strong divine protection will not be able to endure her magical energy-fueled attack and will be destroyed with one blow.

Charisma: B
Natural talent to command an army. It increases the ability of one's army during mass combat. Charisma is a rare talent, and a B rank is enough to lead a country.

Noble Phantasm
Invisible Air ~ Boundary Field of the Wind King
Rank: C
Type: Anti-Personnel Noble Phantasm
Range: 1-2
Maximum Target: 1 object
Description: An invisible sword. It does not allow the enemy to determine its range. It is simple but tremendously effective in hand-to-hand combat. It is a Noble Phantasm protected by strong magic, but it does not mean that the sword itself is invisible. The blade is clad in wind that changes the refraction of light and makes the shape of the sword invisible.

It is not a vacuum, but the wind whirring around the blade is like a weapon and it seems to increase the damage of the slash. Only when the compressed wind is released is a vacuum state created. When the target has "resistance to visual impediments," the accuracy correction of Invisible Air is ineffective. Other than the advantage of making the blade invisible, it is possible to release the compressed wind, making it a single-use projectile weapon. The damage of such an attack is constant, and Saber's strength or mana/magical energy does not affect it.

Excalibur ~ The Sword of Promised Victory
Rank: A++
Type: Anti-castle Noble Phantasm
Range: 1 ~ 99
Maximum Target: 1000 objects
Description: Sword of Light. It is not a weapon made by men, but a divine weapon forged by the planet. It is a Noble Phantasm that is the greatest of holy swords. It transforms the possessor's magical energy into "light," increases its kinetic energy by converging and accelerating it, and allows for usage of sorcery on the level of divine spirits.

To an observer, it looks like a giant beam of light, but its target point is the tip. It is the "ultimate slash" that cuts through everything in the "area" the light goes through. Its enormous power heats space around the tip, and as a result, it is interpreted as a wave of light that mows across the earth. You could also call it a directed energy weapon.

Avalon ~ All is a Distant Utopia
Rank: EX
Type: Barrier Noble Phantasm
Defense target: 1 person
Description: The ability of Excalibur's sheath. The lost third Noble Phantasm. The sheath of the holy sword was excavated by the Einzberns at Cornwall, and returned to the hand of its owner through time. In the legend of King Arthur, the real ability of the holy sword is said to be the "Power of Immortality" in this sheath.

It has the ability to heal the wounds of its owner and stop their aging, but it can actually be called a "moving fortress" centered on an individual. By producing the sheath and moving oneself into the land of the fairies, it shuts out all physical interactions. It can even defend against one of the sorceries, integration.

the windchime's prelude

Saber is actually King Arthur, the legendary hero of England dubbed "The Once and Future King." King Arthur was known as a model knight and great king who led the twelve kings of Northern England (Gododdin) against foreign invasions, particularly by the Picts and Scottish. Although many variations of King Arthur's legend exist (one of pure Briton Arthur and the other Roman Arturius), the game apparently takes a view that merges both the Briton and Roman identities.

The basic legend is pretty well-known. We all know that Arthur was originally a normal kid who, with the help of Merlin, pulls out a legendary sword in a stone. The feat of pulling this legendary sword, Excalibur, then dubs Arthur as the king of England and head of the Knights of the Round Table. Together with his trusted knights, he goes on many adventures and does all of his duties as king. King Arthur was known to have a strong affinity to dragons, bearing the red dragon symbolizing the British. This dragon affinity gave him strong magical qualities. Consequentially, he was weak against heroes who had slain dragons in the past.

However, there is a twist in this version of the tale. In Fate/stay night, King Arthur was actually female. Arturia was the daughter of Uther Pendragon, the King of Britain, and the blue-eyed Ingraine, Duke Cornwall. King Uther left Arturia in the care of Merlin, in exchange for him being able to make love to Duke Cornwall and give birth to their child. Merlin then left Arturia in the care of Sir Ector, a loyal knight of King Uther's. Arturia was to be raised like a normal child until the destined day, when she would choose to pull out the chosen sword. In particular, Arturia was raised more like a male than a female, being rather skilled in swordsmanship.

"I will properly guide this child, one bearing a great destiny, and protect him from the crisis of the royal family."
- Merlin

On the destined day, Arturia was given the choice to pull out the sword and claim her title as king or to not do so. Arturia looked at the condition of her country – there was no king ruling Britain, and Britain was in great need of a ruler. Putting all doubts aside, she pulled the chosen sword from its stone and strived to be the best ruler and hero of Camelot. The people of Camelot were pleased. They did not know of her sex, but they did not care either - they desired a ruler, no more or less.

Excalibur itself was not the chosen sword – it was a treasured sword of a mystical fairyland provided by the Lady of the Lake when Arturia lost the chosen sword. Upon receiving this sword from Vivian, the fairy princess of the lake, Vivian became Arturia's guardian. To further add to this, King Arthur's half-sister and enemy, Morgana, was a fairy of the lake that protected the king too.

Even though she was obviously fair, selfless, and fully devoted to Britain and the well-being of her subjects, Arturia always had a feeling that she might have not been the best ruler for Camelot. She was a perfect ruler and made no mistake in the way she handled the country's affairs, and perhaps this brought upon the criticism she received from her knights, that she lacked empathy. Some of her knights even left Camelot, but the intricate perfectionist in Arturia did not take this to heart and continued ruling Britain without fail.

In her life, she heard of the Holy Grail, and she ordered her knights to find this Holy Grail. More specifically, she commanded three of her knights to embark on this mission, notably Lancelot. Lancelot was considered a perfect knight, but he could not obtain the Holy Grail due to his unfaithful flirting. His son, Galahad, did make it to the Holy Grail, but he abandoned it because of his lack of greed.

King Arthur's legend ended with the death of Arturia. Princess Morgana strived to kill Arthur time and time again. The start of King Arthur's downfall began when Lancelot disappeared after his affair with the king's wife, Guinevere, was revealed. Arturia lost her trusted knight, the sheath of her holy sword, and even her country after going on a long expedition. King Arthur's last battle was in Camlann, and Arturia was killed by Mordred through Princess Morgana's scheme.

Excalibur was returned to the Lady of the Lake by Sir Bedivere, and King Arthur's corpse was carried by the ladies of the lake to the land where heroes are said to sleep, Avalon. Legend has it that King Arthur will awaken and save Britain when in peril.

In Fate/stay night, Arturia becomes a heroic spirit due to her wish to obtain the Holy Grail. She strived to obtain the Holy Grail to reverse the past, to make sure someone who was more suitable than her pulled the chosen sword and became King of Camelot. This wish granted her a miracle that allowed her to participate in the fourth Holy Grail War as a Servant.

More specifically, Saber forms a contract with the world right when she was able to die. This contract keeps Saber alive and within a somewhat frozen state (so she would still be on the verge of death in her world). The pact allows her to attempt to attain the Holy Grail - she would be summoned as a Servant in the Holy Grail War (the fourth one was her first war). The price for this would be becoming a Counter Guardian (a type of Heroic Spirit) after her death. This is the main reason why Saber could not go into spirit form, a form that would conceal her physical appearance. To hide the fact, she blames Shirou and his blotched summoning.

the story of a boy and girl

"—I ask of you. Are you my Master?"
-Saber, day 3

Saber is the main heroine in the Fate route. This is coincidentally the first route the player. The start of the route is rather simple. Shirou accidentally summons Saber, who then goes to fight Lancer. Her fight is interrupted when Lancer decides to retreat. She also detects another Master and Servant duo outside of Shirou's house (the duo happens to be Rin and Archer). In this route, Saber injures Archer, and she was close to killing Rin. Shirou just happens to intervene at the right time, at least for Rin.

From there, Saber keeps her guard on Rin, being that Rin is an opposing Master. She, Shirou, and Rin go to the Fuyuki Church to see Kirei. After Kirei gives Shirou a lowdown of the Holy Grail War, the trio leaves the church and decides to call it a night. However, their night does not end there - a Master named Ilya and her Servant, Berserker, greet the trio at a road intersection. Saber attempts to fight Berserker, but she finds herself outmatched. What shocks her is that Shirou takes a fatal blow for her. While Ilya retreated and both Saber and Shirou survive, Saber finds it shocking that Shirou could do such a careless action. To her, it is unimaginable for a Master to value someone else's life, let alone a Servant's life, over his own.

Initially, Saber finds handling Shirou a very difficult task. He lacks battle experience but is extremely stubborn. Her train of logic essentially crashes into his. She even somewhat defied his orders because she completely disagreed with it. When Shirou opted to not go to investigate the Ryuudo Temple, Saber is infuriated and decides to go off on her own in the middle of the night.

Saber does learn that this was not exactly the best plan, though her respect for Shirou's views does not become prominent until their fights against Rider and Berserker. Her fight with Rider depletes so much prana that Saber comes close to disappearing from the world. Shirou is kidnapped right after the fight too. Thanks to Rin and Archer's help, Saber and Shirou are reunited. Archer's sacrifice allows Rin, Shirou, and Saber to bide some time, ideally for replenishing Saber's prana. The game has an ero-scene (Saber, Rin, and Shirou have a threesome) that provides Saber enough prana to fight Berserker. The PS2 version has a scene where Shirou goes and fights the inner dragon in her... or something along those lines. To add to this, Shirou is able to replicate Saber's Caliburn, the legendary sword she does not have access to in her Servant form. With it, they are able to defeat Berserker.

Being Saber's route, Shirou learns of Saber's past through dreams (the Master-Servant contract allows for one party's memories to reach the other party). When he learns that Saber wants to redo her past, he tries to convince her that her ideals are wrong. Rather than being remorseful of the past, she should be proud of her achievements, no matter how painful or sorrowful it might have been. This becomes very hard for Saber to digest. For one, abandoning her goal is almost like killing a part of herself. At one point, Shirou is enticed by the Holy Grail, as it could allow Saber to stay in his world after the war. After all, Shirou loves Saber, and letting Saber live a normal life with him should be better than going back to her world, where she would inevitably be greeted by her death. When he tries to sway her away from her ideals on their date, Saber is crushed; she believed Shirou understood her sentiments and goals. At the same time, Shirou's point of view is not wrong either. Well, ignoring the idea of her staying with him.

While Saber comes to terms with her actions, Shirou and Saber find out that the Grail is corrupted. They also encounter Gilgamesh, an Archer-class Servant who was in the last Holy Grail War with Saber. Thanks to Kirei and his assistance, Gilgamesh managed to stay in the world for almost ten years. Gilgamesh is much stronger than Saber (or any other Servant for that matter), as seen in their encounter on day 12. In addition, Kirei kidnaps Ilya and severely injures Rin. All seemed lost, but Shirou and Saber soon find their trump card, Saber's Avalon, Excalibur's scabbard. Saber lost Avalon in her lifetime, and Avalon happened to be the catalyst Kiritsugu used to summon her. Avalon was what Kiritsugu used to save Shirou in the fire, and the reason why Shirou had an odd self-healing 'power' was due entirely to the scabbard. Shirou returns Avalon to Saber, and the two prepare for their final battle.

In their fight against Kirei and Gilgamesh, Shirou and Saber split up - Shirou takes care of Kirei while Saber encounters Gilgamesh. This scene captures the mutual understanding of both parties, especially Shirou. The guy who was against Saber fighting now acknowledges Saber as a competent fighter and is reliant on her to defeat Gilgamesh. Because of their mutual understanding and Avalon's power, Shirou and Saber are victorious.

Even though Shirou loves Saber and would love for her to stay with him, he believes dragging down Saber would be selfish and unfair. He loves Saber for who she is, her determination and achievements included. Stripping her of those values would be doing great injustice to her. In the end, Shirou uses his last Command Spell to order Saber to destroy the Grail. She then leaves the modern-day world, returning to her world to face her death. Before her departure, she tells Shirou that she loves him. She then leaves gracefully and with nothing short of pride in her accomplishments.

the critique to the wish

In Unlimited Blade Works, Saber is no longer the main heroine (that would be Tohsaka Rin). She still is Shirou's loyal Servant. Although Saber gains respect for Shirou as her ally, the two do not share a romantic relationship in this route (go back to Fate for Saber love, fool!). The beginning of Unlimited Blade Works slightly differs from the other two routes. As Archer was not injured by Saber on day 3 (Shirou uses a Command Spell to stop Saber), Archer is able to participate in the first fight against Berserker. This slight change apparently makes a huge difference in the dynamics in Saber and Shirou's relationship.

A few points to note for this route is that Saber does not stay Shirou's official Servant. At one point, Caster, the magus Servant in the Holy Grail War, uses her Nobel Phantasm, Rule Breaker, to break Shirou and Saber's contract. Caster attempts to put Saber under her full control, but Saber's will is able to linger this process. In addition, Shirou and Rin come to rescue, and Rin is able to form a contract with Saber. This makes Rin the official Master of Saber, although Saber acknowledges the both of them as valuable allies.

Saber's goal in the war is once again poked at. She wants to redo her past but it is better to simple acknowledge what happened and move on. The main deviation here is that she realizes this on her own. As in, Shirou does not directly try to persuade her. It is through Shirou and Archer's conflict that Saber comes to realization of the flaws in her goal. The most pivotal point for Saber is when she silently observes Shirou and Archer's fight in the abandoned Einzbern mansion.

Unlimited Blade Works has two possible endings. In the 'True End,' Saber destroys the Grail and leaves for her world. Through Shirou and Archer, she comes in terms with her past. If the player managed to accumulate Saber affection points (can be obtained through certain choices in the game), Saber decides not to leave for her world. Instead, she stays in Shirou and Rin's world as Rin's familiar. Either way, Saber ditches her goal for wanting to reverse her past.

the dark side

Like in Unlimited Blade Works, Saber is not the main heroine or Shirou's love interest. The first view days are very similar to Fate. However, Saber and Shirou do not develop a romantic relationship. One possibility could be that Shirou pays more attention to Sakura at the start of the route. Nonetheless, they have a mutual sense of respect for each other. Shirou's acknowledgement of Saber as a warrior happens relatively early in this route too.

Unfortunately, Saber and Shirou's partnership sadly ends around day 8 of the route. During one of their evening investigations, Saber and Shirou decide to head to the Ryuudo temple. The first time, they find Caster standing in front of her dead Master (Saber then defeats Caster). The second time they go to the temple, Saber ends up fighting True Assassin. Through a small yet fatal mistake, Saber is defeated and ends up being devoured by the Shadow, ending her story within the Holy Grail War.

Or so we are left to believe...

When Sakura gains control of the Shadow, Saber returns to the story. She is no longer the same - for lack of better words, Saber is taken to the dark side. Saber is resurrected, but now as Black Saber, a strong yet tainted warrior. As you can see in the lower subheader below with, Black Saber is at her strongest in terms of sheer power.

Shirou feels slight remorse at the situation, but he does not show sympathy for Black Saber. Black Saber too does not show a single shread of sympathy or compassion - she is just a loyal, tainted Servant under Sakura's control. Shirou and Saber's last encounter is at the end of the route. With Rider's help, Shirou is able to defeat Black Saber. When he stabs her, Black Saber remarks about how strong Shirou has become (or rather, he was always strong). Shirou recalls his time with Saber as well; he even recollects some fragments of her life as King Arthur. While Saber's form changes in this route, one thing remains consistent - Saber always leaves with a sense of grace and calmness.

Saber does not get a 'good end' in Heaven's Feel (if you opt not to kill her in the final battle, Rin and Shirou get devoured by the Shadow/Sakura), but there is one possibility that could be considered the 'Black Saber ending' in this route. If Shirou is unable to get Rider's help in the final battle, he and Rin go to face Sakura on their own. Saber stops Shirou at the passageway to the Grail, and the two engage in a duo. Shirou is able to hold his own and comes extremely close to killing Black Saber. Unfortunately, his mind shut down on him and he goes into a vegetated sort of state before he can deliver the final blow. While Black Saber will regenerate, Shirou manages to buy time for Rin - one could speculate Rin is able to handle the situation in the end. Saber shows a little remorse, especially since Shirou shows a lot of promise. However, she has seen many futile deaths in her life. From there, she waits to regenerate and wonders what Sakura and Rin will do when they find out that Shirou is dead.

Gladiolus was a one-page fansite made for Amassment's one-page shrine marathon in September 2009. Saber is not my most favorite character in Fate/stay night (I would say Rin and Lancer are my favorite characters), but I did enjoy TYPE-MOON's adaption of King Arthur's story. I was always a fan of King Arthur's legend, so this was definitely a treat for me (though I initially thought Saber was Joan d'Arc). I also admired Saber's strength, chivalry, and pride as a warrior, former king, and a strong woman, both by mind and heart. Regardless, she had fatal flaws that do get corrected. That is why I thought of making this small tribute to everyone's favorite knight.

As for the name, gladiolus is a type of flower species. The flowers symbolize strength, grace, and kindness. The word gladiolus comes from the Latin world 'gladius,' which means 'little sword.' Both the meaning and the symbolism behind the flower species suited Saber, at least in my eyes. That is why I decided to name the site Gladiolus.
